Is the classroom dead?

Learning on the go has become something of a phenomenon as more and more people and businesses begin to discover the benefits of getting out of the classroom. But why is learning on the go proving so popular and what does this mean for the more traditional, formal option of the classroom?

Flexibility is important to learners

A new generation of learners now puts flexibility at the heart of needs when it comes to embracing learning. A formal classroom environment where learning sessions are pre-scheduled and don’t take into account the demands individuals have on their time can be tough to accommodate. From busy professionals, through to working mothers, many of us suffer from a serious shortage of time and the flexibility that learning on the go offers makes it a much more appealing option.

Online learning communities

Collaboration is a key part of the learning process and something that is often highlighted as one of the main advantages in a formal classroom environment that is defined by social interaction. However, thanks to the increasing number of online learning communities, collaboration has become central to the learning on the go model too. So, all the benefits of working with others and learning together are also being translated into learning on the go.

Engagement with learning

E-learning and mobile learning tend to show much higher rates of engagement than other more traditional types of learning. Mobile learning, for example, can be personalised, which tends to make the learner much more engaged with the subject matter and materials. Better engaged learners often achieve more and are much less likely to give up half way through.

Completing the course

In addition to the element of engagement, there are a number of other factors in learning on the go that make it much more likely learners will finish the course.  For example, mobile learning is accessible at any time – and anywhere – so learners can complete their courses in a way that works with other time commitments. Mobile learning can also be broken down into bit sized chunks to suit the learner. This is in direct contrast to a formal classroom environment where there is no opportunity to modify the learning experience for individual abilities and needs. The overall result is that rates of completion in mobile learning are higher and learners can move seamlessly on to the next learning challenge.

Adaptable support

Learning on the go is accessible via a range of different devices, from a smart phone to a tablet and laptop. So, no matter what the equipment a learner has they still have the same course and set of materials at their fingertips. Plus, performance support is accessible as and when required – no tutorials or meetings need to be set as for formal classroom teaching. Instead, learners can search for information to answer their own queries. Finally, learning management is far simpler with on the go learning  as updates, notifications and information are easily distributed.
